Nearly 150 Colorado Elected Officials, Law Enforcement, and Organizations Oppose Amendment 81

Colorado elected officials, law enforcement officials, and organizations representing parents, families, educators, immigrants, and advocates oppose Constitutional Amendment to expand ICE overreach in Colorado

Nearly 150 Colorado elected officials, law enforcement officials, and organizations are encouraging voters to vote NO on Amendment 81, which will be on the statewide ballot this November. If passed, Amendment 81 would permanently amend the Colorado Constitution and override current state laws limiting ICE authority in Colorado. Colorado voters must vote NO on Amendment 81 to ensure we limit ICE’s power in Colorado, not expand it, and protect Coloradans’ right to due process. Today, the No on 81 Campaign announced the support of nearly 150 elected officials, law enforcement officials, and organizations across Colorado.

“The most basic tenant of a functional justice system is the trust that law enforcement and district attorneys have with victims and their community – trust is built upon the fact that everyone deserves justice no matter who they are,” said Gordon McLaughlin, District Attorney for Larimer and Jackson Counties. “Amendment 81 will enshrine in our Constitution a requirement to betray that trust and that means our communities become less safe.”

“As a Summit County Commissioner, I strongly encourage Coloradans to vote No on Amendment 81. Not only will Amendment 81 expand ICE presence in Colorado and threaten all Coloradans’ right to due process, it will do so by requiring local governments to spend resources we don’t have on coordinating with federal immigration authorities at the expense of local government and law enforcement programs and budgets,” said Tamara Pogue, Summit County Commissioner.

“No Coloradan  should be targeted by ICE overreach based on their appearance, accent, or other characteristics, but Amendment 81 will do just that by requiring local law enforcement to act as an arm of the Trump administration’s deportation machine,” said Henry Sandman, co-Executive Director of the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition. “We should vote NO on Amendment 81 to limit the power of ICE in Colorado, not expand it.”

Under Amendment 81, state and local law enforcement are required to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when they charge Coloradans with certain crimes, before they have had a chance to defend themselves in court and before a court has decided if that person is guilty.
